Eadie" Subject: Coast Guard - Potential collaboration For your information, I just sent out the following letter inviting a representative of the Coast Guard to our meeting. Also, Joe DiPinto has asked for, and recieved, an invitation to attend (at his expense). P.D. Barlow Captain, U.S. Coast Guard Chief, Aids to Navigation and Waterways Management Branch Ninth Coast Guard District 1240 E. Ninth St Cleveland, OH 44199-2060 Captain Barlow: Our NOAA lab, in collaboration with academic scientists supported by the National Science Foundation, will be initiating a major five year research program in southern Lake Michigan. We had previously communicated with your predecessor, LtCmdr Desh (see attached), who expressed the Coast Guards continued willingness to provide helicopter and/or ship support when available. Helicopter support by the Coast Guard last year was extremely valuable in some preliminary winter lake sampling which helped us to focus the proposal that was eventually funded. Basically, our program is designed to investigate the impact of winter storms on the exchange of contaminants between the sediments and water in southern Lake Michigan. We plan a pilot cruise in Feb, 1998 and 3-4 two week major survey cruises for each of the next two years - predominantly in late winter. We plan to use the EPAs RV Lake Guardian, when available, for the major two week cruises and the RV Laurentian (U MI) and our RV Shenehon for other cruises. We do not have any foreseeable requests for Coast Guard platforms at this time, but would like to keep that option available - most likely would be helicopter collection of water samples. Details of our proposed program have been put on the web at http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle including our first principal investigator meeting near Milwaukee on Aug 10-12. I would like to invite you, or a designee, to attend in order to become familiar with our program and discuss/develop potential Coast Guard collaboration. We can issue invitational travel orders from here and pay all expenses. I can be reached by phone (313-741-2281), fax (313-741-2055) or e-mail (Eadie@glerl.noaa.gov) in order to arrange travel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Brian J.
