As we write this letter there is no ice on Lake Michigan and we do not expect to see a significant amount this winter. Much of our initial planning for this cruise was based on the results from the Milwaukee workshop. After much discussion with a variety of individuals we have decided to have fixed dates for the start of each cruise leg. However, we recognized the importance of having some flexibility to sample an event and thus are planning to have the R/V Shenehon (65' NOAA boat) available during most of the Laurentian cruise (i.e., if a plume develops during the middle or end of the Laurentian cruise, the Shenehon could be used as an additional platform to sample this event). The days allotted for each leg are longer than originally requested (12 vs 7) so we should have plenty of time to accomplish the goals of each leg. Twelve day legs were chosen to provide for science (7 working days) and weather days. The dates for each leg are as follows: Leg 1 (survey)- March 9 through March 20 March 21 transition day (we will be in port for ca. 30- 48h) Leg 2 (process)- March 22 through April 2 April 3 transition day ( we will be in port for ca. 30-48 h) Leg 3 (lagrangian)- April 4 through April 15 All legs will start and finish in Muskegon at the Lake Michigan Field Station. The exact duration of each leg will depend on the science, weather and other unforeseen events. We expect some flexibility with the likelihood that individual investigators can disembark from the ship prior to the end of the leg. All scientific equipment for each cruise leg can be shipped to the Lake Michigan Field Station, 1431 Beach St., Muskegon, MI 49941, ATTN: EEGLE Cruise, and we will keep it in heated storage until the start of the cruise. Prior to sending scientific equipment, supplies, etc. to Muskegon you should drop an email to Fahnenstiel letting him know the number of boxes that will be shipped and the expected date of arrival. Also, if you would like to arrive early for a cruise in order to test equipment, etc. there is space (labs, office, small conf. room, etc.) available at the Lake Michigan Field Station. Based on the requests at the Milwaukee meeting, the ship is full for all legs. In fact, leg 2 is overbooked by one berth; nine scientists requested space but we only have berths for eight. I am asking that all scientists requesting berths on the Laurentian cruise, particularly leg 2, reexamine their needs and see if we can free up any berths. The list of scientific personnel for each leg of the Laurentian cruise is listed below: LEG 1 name berths Tom Johengen (Chief Sci.) 1 Jim Cotner 1 Vanderploeg et al. 2 Fahnenstiel 1 Peter Lavrentyev 1 MIL Technician (Ruberg) 1 UM CTD technician 1 Total berths required 8 LEG 2 Fahnenstiel et al. 3 Vanderploeg et al. 2 Tom Johengen 1 Jim Cotner 1 Gardner et al. 2 Total berths required 9๗one too many LEG 3 Fahnenstiel et al. 3 Vanderploeg 1 Cotner et al. 2 Gardner 1 McCormick 1 Total berths required 8 In the next two weeks we expect to have a cruise plan ready to circulate to all participating scientists.
