Eadie" Subject: Update Cc: L.Guardian@AOL.COM, Burns@genie.glerl.noaa.gov Time for a celebration - we'vereached an interim milestone with the completion of the first set of EEGLE Pilot year cruises; the Jan/Feb Lake Guardian and 3 legs (survey, process, and lagrangian) on the Laurentian. EEGLE participants also used GLERL's RV Shenehon, the U WI RV Neeskay and a second Guardian cruise for Keri to collect PCBs during the event. We certainly had a great event to sample and generally made the most of it. Participants that I've talked with are extremely pleased with the suite of samples available for analysis and are deep into processing. Thanks to all participants ! NO time to rest ! The field program will continue through the summer, with cruises scheduled from late April through November - to remind everyone of major activities (more complete list on our web site) in case they're interested in some samples in the southern basin: April 22 - 28 Sediment cruise Laurentian May 15 - 28 Trap retrieval Shenehon June 8 - 28 Trap redeployment Shenehon June 15 - 28 Current meters Shenehon June 22 - 28 Sediment Laurentian August 22 - 28 Sediment/Trap Laurentian Sept 22 - 28 Sediment /Trap Laurentian Oct 22 - 28 Sediment/Trap Laurentian In addition, Gary et al. will be sampling the Muskegon line every month from the Shenehon or small boat. Now that we've finished patting ourselves on the back - we need to start thinking about vessel requirements for next year. Best bet for a large vessel is the Guardian - we have a $$ request into NOAA for support and EPA-GLNPO is supportive. Our original plans for the large vessel and Laurentian (from our August, 1997 workshop) are below. Chew on them a bit - I need to begin to get any revisions for TOTAL TIME by June and will get back to all on this topic. We need final numbers for the Laurentian by mid-August for UNOLs. Dates are more flexible - we can 'finalize' them at our all-hands meeting the week of Oct 12. Years 2 & 3 (1999-2000) Feb 1 - Feb 15 EPA RV Lake Guardian Pre-plume: Survey and limited Process Studies ~ 8 days, 8-10 Participants Mar 15 - Apr 15 EPA RV Lake Guardian Plume Event: Survey, Process Studies, and Lagrangian Studies ~ 21 days, 10-14 Participants May 15 - Jun 15 EPA RV Lake Guardian Post Plume Event: Survey, Process Studies, and Lagrangian Studies ~ 21 days, 10-14 Participants Aug 1 - 31 EPA RV Lake Guardian Summer Contrast: Survey, Process Studies, and Lagrangian Studies ~ 21 days, 10-14 Participants For each of the other 8 months not listed above, the Laurentian is needed to handle monitoring studies at GLERL 45m and 110m stations and Station A in the moored array box. Each cruise would require 2 days and 2 scientific personnel. Most mooring work will be done from the Shenehon and ROV work from the Neeskay. Again - thanks to all - keep the enthusiasm high ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Brian J.
