Our Special Session at the upcoming ASLO (see application below), in Sante
Fe, NM, has been accepted by the organizing committee. The meeting is the
first week of Feb, 1999. I don't know how many presentation slots we have
yet and there are also others (eg. Gulf of Bothnia) joining us as we wanted
as broad an audience as possible. Many of our contributions will be posters.

Start organizing your thoughts - we should take every advantage to both
communicate among ourselves and show some results to our peers at this meeting.

I'll provide info about abstracts, registration, etc as soon as I get it.

Abstract deadline is September 18, 1998. I'll send format info when I get it.

ASLO - 1999 Abstract for Proposed Special Session.

Title: The Impact of Large Episodic Events on Lake and Coastal Ecosystems

Episodic events can exert major influences on ecosystems. These events also
provide an opportunity to probe processes with a true interdisciplinary
focus. Storms and other events drive circulation and waves, resuspending and
transporting sediments. In many systems and for many constituents, the
resuspension of surface sediments, containing large inventories of nutrients
and contaminants deposited over the past few decades, presently results in
much greater fluxes than external inputs. In addition to their influence on
chemical, temperature and light fields, storms and turbidity fronts are
recognized as important factors in the structuring of planktonic
communities. In this session we seek to communicate recent approaches and
accomplishments in complex coastal ecosystem research.

Supplemental information: Currently several interdisciplinary programs are
exploring this topic and representatives have agreed to participate in this
session if it is accepted. These include NSF-CoOP and NOAA-COP programs in
Lakes Michigan and Superior, Lake Ladoga, Gulf of Bothnia, and the Gulf of
Finland. We have over 20 verbal commitments for presentations and several
leads to other groups.
