From: David Schwab Subject: CoOP News and ECSS paper To: eegle-pi@wings.glerl.noaa.gov Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 9:53:03 EST Status: RO Hi all! First some news from the CoOP Steering Committee. The Announcement of Opportunity for the wind-driven transport processes study in the NE Pacific has been released by NSF. You can get a copy at: http://www.hpl.umces.edu/coop/ao.htm. The deadline for proposal submission in March 15, 1999. The draft outline of CoOP's Buoyancy-Driven Transport Processes Workshop Report (AKA Buoyancy-Influenced Margins Workshop) is also available at: http://www.hpl.umces.edu/coop/buoyancy%20report.htm This is the workshop that was recently held in Salt Lake City to plan for the 3rd part of CoOP's 'big science' programs. This draft outline is open to public review and comments should be addressed to Dr. Susan Henrichs, Chair of the Workshop Committee. Dmitry Beletsky, Jing Lou, and I just finished a paper on "Modeling a Coastal Turbidity Plume in Lake Michigan" which we submitted to a special issue of Estuarine, Coastal, and Shelf Science. The special issue will focus on visualization in coastal marine science and will have provisions for computer graphics including animations. Our paper is about our first attempt to model the 1998 plume and includes two animations, one of the modeled circulation patterns and one of Jing Lou's sediment concentration model output. If you are intersted, I put a copy of the paper (in WordPerfect and Postscript formats) and the figures and animations on our anonymous ftp server at: ftp://ftp.glerl.noaa.gov/schwab/ecss. We'd appreciate any comments. As a result of suggestions at the all-hands meeting, we have purchased equipment to establish three more metorological stations. In addition to the CCIW stations at Michigan City and St. Joe, and the GLERL ststion at Muskegon, we hope to set up stations at Milwaukee, Waukegan, and Holland. There's a good chance that we'll be able to get at least the Milwaukee station set up before the end of the year. That's all for now. Happy Thanksgiving! ... Dave Schwab
