EEGLE: R/V LAURENTIAN CRUISE PLAN
March 9 - April 15, 1998

Overview

The cruise will be divided into three separate legs with the generalized objectives of Survey along multiple transects, Process studies at master stations, and Lagrangian experiments at multiple sites. Each leg will start on a fixed date and be allotted 12 working days to accomplish their tasks, with 2 days for turn-around of personnel and equipment in between legs. The cruise names and allotted dates are: Leg 1: SURV-1998-068 Mar 9 - Mar 20 Leg 2: PROC-1998-081 Mar 22 - Apr 2 Leg 3: LAGR-1998-094 Apr 4 - Apr 15

Dietary Requirements

One vegetarian on Leg 2 (Joann Cavaletto) Many people have requested having a salad bar available at all lunches and dinners to supplement the meals.

Station Names and Locations

Transects are defined by a line from the 10m depth contour to the 110m depth contour and are named by the respective City which approximates their location along the coastline. Discrete sampling station along transects are designated by 1 or 2 initials from the transect name plus the depth of the water column at that position. See the planned cruise tracks: http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/cruises/tmp/surv-1998-068-planned1.gif http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/cruises/tmp/proc-1998-081-planned1.gif http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/cruises/tmp/lagr-1998-094-planned1.gif Please note that transects are specifically defined, however, station positions along the transect are NOT fixed at this time. A general position is defined in the cruise plan below but the exact location may change as a function of the location of the sediment plume. Stations defined at 10 and 15 m depths refer to sites known to be within the plume. Stations defined at 30 and 45m refer to sites at the outer boundary of the plume. Stations defined at 80m or 110m are considered open lake or outside the plume.

Data Management

All sampling activities must be entered into a Cruise Operations Log which will be maintained by the Chief Scientist. Details are provided on the WEB site and in handouts kept with the log book on the ship. NOTE: all times and Julian Days used in the log are based on GMT (plus 5 hours from EST).

CTD Techs

Jim Cotner and Tom Johengen (with as much assistance as pleaded for) will serve as the CTD techs on legs 2 and 3 when the ships tech is not available.
