Everyone,

We need to start planning for the next Event cruise on the Lake Guardian,
with possible support by the Laurentian. Please remember that the plan is
to wait and respond to the actual event. The scheduled March 10 date was
only a place holder, and NOT meant to indicate an actual sailing date. We
should be able to get a 2-3 day meterological forecast of the necessary
storm, and then a day or so for lake conditions to become workable. Ideally
we are loaded on the ship, and depart as soon as sailing conditions are
possible.

I currently have a list of 16 possible scientists who are scheduled to go on
this cruise (see below). I was told that we can have 14 slots, so please
confirm that you will use the spaces and that you can be responsive to the
event given an approximate 3 day warning. IF the event is delayed (or
doesnt occur) we should probably schedule a FIXED cruise date for people to
get out and at least generate some good background data. Remember we only
have the Guardian until April 12, then she's gone until the end of May.

Hank V. has scheduled time on the Laurentian from Mar 8 - Mar 20. If he's
on the Guardian, then the ship is obviously available to support field
studies in other ways. Please coordinate with him if you think you might
want to use the Laurentian to collect and deliver samples for shore-based
experiments etc....

When I have an official list for the cruise we can start discussing cruise
details. But in general, we want to try and get the whole southern basin
survey completed as well as do the best job for a time series within the
major St. Joe study area and sample within the offshore transport feature.
I can envision doing the Racine transect as we depart from Milwaukee and
then head to St. Joe. We could then return to the St. Joe area every other
day, and trying to get the other transects completed on the off days,
working back within the offshore feature as possible.

TENTATIVE PERSONNEL LIST for the GUARDIAN
1. Tom Johengen, GLERL
2. Andy Winkelman, GLERL
3. Craig Riley, GLERL
4. Hank Vanderploeg, GLERL
5. Megan Agy, GLERL
6. Joann Cavaletto, GLERL
7. Mark McCarthy, UT
8. Rich McKenzie, UWM
9. Kim ?? , UWM
10. Don Czemania, UWM
11. Keri Hornbuckle (or student), U Iowa

Jim and Peter, you guys are the most tentative. Try and let me know if you
will just work shore-based and/or would try for the Laurentian. We can of
course also collect and preserve samples for you as needed.

Thanks, Tom
