The wind and wave forecasts starting as early as Thursday have proven true. The winds reached sustained highs of >35 knots from the North; and waves reach sustained highs of >10 feet for more than 15 hours starting at 0100 GMT on Sat April 8, 2000. See max GLCFS winds at http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/resources/plume_images/lwn200009906.gif. See max GLCFS waves at http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/resources/plume_images/lwv200009909.gif. Wave heights peaked at 17.1 feet at buoy 45007 (see http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/resources/plume_images/45007-wh.gif). And luckily, the NOAA-14 satellite had a cloud-free pass at hour 2100, DOY 099. Check it out at http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/resources/plume_images/00plume-apr.html. All of these images, plus those of past events, are located on the EEGLE Plume Images Page, http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/eegle/resources/plume_images/plume_images.html. At this early stage, this event looks similar in magnitude and area of impact to the March 1998 event. Hopefully, the brave souls heading out today and tomorrow on the R/V Laurentian and R/V Shenehon will be able to provide a more quantitative comparison. Regards, Greg
