Report from the Nov 30-Dec 1
EEGLE-KITES All-hands Meeting
Barry Lesht hosted the meeting at the Argonne National Laboratory.
Overviews were presented for both the EEGLE and KITES programs providing
a background for the afternoon poster sessions. Approximately 30 posters
provided insights into the findings of individual projects.
On the second day we broke into three workgroups (physical, sediments, and
ecology) with a focus on developing a consensus for coordinated products. We have
agreed on the following:
- Publication of primary manuscripts is encouraged in any venue - a web bibliography
will be maintained for each program
- A joint publication (see 1 below) of contributed papers from the two programs
- A synthesis volume (see 2 below) of program review manuscripts
EEGLE-KITES Synthesis Issue(s)
1. A joint issue of all contributed manuscripts
- Submissions within the Programs' funding cycle (ending summer, 2002)
- First choice is L&O, second is JGR
- Val Klump has volunteered to organize the process (contact the journal, select
editors, assist establishing peer-review process, etc.)
- Process
- Converge on contributors over the coming year
- Convene a forth EEGLE-KITES meeting in August, 2001, where all potential contributors will
have 30 minutes (including at least 5 minutes for comments/questions) to present their work
- Estimate 25-35 potential manuscripts
- @ 30 minutes = 15 hours
- plus about an equal amount of time for small group discussions = Four day meeting
- Houghton (Keweenaw Mountain Lodge) has been nominated with Sarah Green hosting
- we invite other venues and volunteer organizers
- Manuscripts can be contributed until June 2002 (final date to be established at
the meeting)
- Another objective for this meeting is to begin to form the teams/themes for the
second (synthesis) volume
- Abstracts from all presentations will be assembled as a product of this meeting
2. A Synthesis Special Issue
- NSF will consider SMALL synthesis proposals funding for the 'synthesizers', perhaps
workshop(s). The EEGLE-KITES management teams will serve to coordinate/filter these proposals
(1 page synthesis manuscript outlines, with authors and budget)
- Target for letter proposals is spring 2002 (maintains program continuity)
- Schedule based on the science
- Publication vehicle is undecided - perhaps an AGU monograph. Other suggestions
The NSF CoOP Steering Committee would like to attend a summary EEGLE-KITES meeting.
The August 2001 meeting may be the best venue. It was also suggested to hold a special
session at the 2002 Ocean Sciences Meeting.
