GLERL Scientist Dr. David Schwab
Awarded Department of Commerce Silver Medal
Dr.
David Schwab will receive the Department of Commerce Silver
Medal at the NOAA Awards Ceremony on December 7, 1999 in
Washington D.C.
This award is the second highest honorary award granted by the
Secretary of Commerce. A Silver Medal is defined as exceptional
performance characterized by noteworthy or superlative contributions
which have a direct and lasting impact within the Department.
Dr. Schwab is cited for development, advancement and application
of circulation and physical process modeling leading to the Great
Lakes Coastal Forecasting System. This is the first regional demonstration
of the NOAA Coastal Forecasting System to predict surface temperature,
currents, and wave heights to provide operational nowcasts for the
Great Lakes.
Dr. Schwab's improvements in the development of predictive models
can be applied for both scientific advancement and interpretation
of the physics of the Great Lakes and also for use as products for
the safety and utility of the boating and commercial shipping public.
Congratulations Dave!
