The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) is recruiting for two positions 1) Chief of the Technology and Scientific Support Branch and 2) Research Scientist. Both positions will be located at our main facility in Ann Arbor, MI.  GLERL is a center of expertise on Great Lakes, estuarine, and coastal marine ecosystems whose mission is to conduct integrated, interdisciplinary environmental research in support of resource management and environmental services.  We place special emphasis on a systems approach to research by a multidisciplinary staff with a diversity of equipment. Our research programs and projects examine physical phenomena, such as currents, ice cover, and water levels, in concert with biogeochemical, ecosystem, food web, and water quality studies in freshwater, estuarine and coastal marine ecosystems.  Details of GLERL's research and mission can be found on our web site at http://www.glerl.noaa.gov.

1) Chief, Technology and Scientific Support Branch: GLERL is seeking a candidate with a strong background in management and policy, research and/or technology experience.  The Branch Chief will be responsible for supervising and managing a diverse group of individuals who have expertise in the sciences, engineering, computer science, and vessel operations.  This position will oversee the operation of GLERL's research vessel, R/V Shenehon.   The Branch Chief will actively participate in the management of the laboratory and in planning activities for GLERL and NOAA, and will be expected to play a leadership role in research, developmental projects, or technological innovations on issues in the Great Lakes or coastal zone.   It is expected that candidates will have obtained a doctoral degree in their field of expertise.   This position can be filled at GS-14 or 15 depending on experience, corresponding to a salary range of $ 70,007 - $107,047 including locality pay for Ann Arbor, MI.

2) Research Scientist: GLERL is seeking a candidate with a strong record in Great Lakes and/or coastal research to complement ongoing research programs.   The Research Scientist will be expected to take a lead in developing a state-of-the-art research program.   Individuals who can contribute and complement existing research areas and work well on multi-disciplinary projects will be preferred.   It is expected that candidates will have obtained a doctoral degree in their field of expertise.   The Research Scientist position can be filled at any of the following grades GS13/14/15 depending on experience.   This corresponds to a salary range of $59,242 - $107,047 including locality pay for Ann Arbor, MI.
