National Ocean Sciences Bowl team visits LMFS

The Irmo High School National Ocean Sciences Bowl team from Columbia, South Carolina visited GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station (LMFS) in Muskegon, Michigan, August 2-5. The team won the all expense paid trip to LMFS after placing fourth in the NOSB national competition held in Miami, Florida, April 2-3.

Members of the team toured LMFS and were briefed on GLERL and LMFS research. The team participated in several Great Lakes-themed activities, including the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, Michigan with a tour of the Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw. Other events included a close-up look at Great Lakes sand dune communities at Hoffmaster State Park; beachside collection of larval fish samples with two University of Michigan scientists; a stop at a local trout stream to learn about running water ecology and Great Lakes hydrology; and a tour of the U.S.S. Silversides WWII submarine.

The coach of the team from Irmo High School is Stephen Orr, a chemistry teacher and coach of the IHS Science Team. Alex Koth, captain of the team, has a diverse interest in science, and hopes to major in biomedical engineering in college. Jonathan Hess is a member of several organizations at IHS, including the Science Team and the National Honor Society. Bernadette Nebus is president of the Art Club and the National Honor Society, and hopes to major in biochemistry and minor in art in college. Michael Parrish has a strong interest in the biological sciences, with an emphasis on herpetology. Eve Hosford is involved with the Science Team and the orchestra.
