GLERL What's New: 2001NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory GLERL Co-Hosts Great Lakes Odyssey During August 14 - 16 GLERL co-hosted the Great Lakes Odyssey, a visit to the Great Lakes region by 18 U.S. House and Senate staffers to learn about current research and policy issues related to management and protection of Great Lakes resources. Tour co-hosts joining GLERL included the USGS Great Lakes Science Center, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the Great Lakes Commission. The three-day event featured briefings on research and/or management activities of the co-host organizations, cruises on research vessels (including GLERL's R/V Shenehon), and a visit to the USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station on Lake Huron where staffers learned about ongoing research to control sea lamprey. Invasive species issues and research were key themes of the tour and GLERL Director Steve Brandt presented an overview of recent, ongoing, and planned research and management activities among agencies in the Great Lakes basin to address this critical threat. The tour was based out of the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, and gave participants a first-hand opportunity to experience the true splendor of the Great Lakes. Field trips and cruises were carried out in the Cheboygan - Hammond Bay area in Michigan's northern lower peninsula.
