GLERL Aquatic Science Award Winners
Southeast Michigan Science Fair 2000
Junior Models and Collections:
Winner: Trevor Jones, Ann Arbor
Title: Determining how much sand, silt and clay is in a soil sample.
Method: Used the fact that particles with different sizes settle through
water at different speeds to separate them into three size categories.
Junior Experiments:
Winner: Julia Alexander, Ann Arbor
Title: How does thermal pollution affect aquatic life?
Method: Exposed aquatic plants to different water temperatures and
recorded the effect on plant growth.
Senior Experiments:
Winner: Sara Palmer, Addison
Title: The effect of leaf type, site selection, and leaf pack removal on
stream invertebrates and water quality determination.
Method: Set different types of leaf packs in several different
environmental settings and recorded the effects on invertebrate
populations.
