        Date: Thursday, July 23, 1998
        Time: 9:00 am
  Room: 105 Main Conference Room

Dr. Balaji Rajagopalan, Associate Research Scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, will be presenting a talk entitled "Nonparametric Functional Estimation: Applications to Hydroclimate Data" on Thursday, July 23rd at 9:00 am in the main conference room of the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Nonparametric estimators of probability and regression functions allow flexible and adaptive data exploration. Intensive research in the area, owing to cheaper computational resources has stimulated this field recently. The utility of these techniques will be demonstrated through a variety of hydroclimate applications. The applications include: stochastic simulation of daily weather variables (useful for various hydrologic modeling/water and other resource planning purposes); spatial estimation of hydrologic fields such as precipitation, temperature, etc. from irregularly sampled data; flood frequency analysis; time series forecasting; and modeling point processes.
