ABSTRACT: Integrated Environmental Assessment is an analytic framework
that facilitates linkages and communication among scientists, decision-makers,
and stakeholders in order to guide resource managers and scientific research.
This approach is being used in a water resources study of Lake Lanier, Georgia.
Scientific hypotheses are encapsulated in a representative food web model
of the lake ecosystem. Members of a local stakeholder group are actively
engaged and their environmental concerns and preferences regarding the lake
have been elicited through a mail survey. Survey data will be used to construct
"behavior definitions" which are matched against model simulation results
using a Monte Carlo analysis. Our objective is to identify model parameters
which are key to reaching the behavior targets and to effectively communicate
this information to decision-makers and stakeholders. In addition, network
analysis, an input-output based assessment tool, can be used to identify
and quantify direct and indirect influences and relations among system compartments.
One property of this research, Network Synergism - the emergence of positive
interactions, is demonstrated in both ecological and economic models.
