| Huron River Cleanup Day: Since 1994, a GLERL
scientist has organized a spring cleanup day for Ann Arbor's Huron
River. This particular outreach project has grown more successful
every year, and is now supported by other community service groups.
Coordinated with the City of Ann Arbor Department of Solid Waste and
Parks Department. GLERL scientists lead an all day cleanup effort
by land and canoe each year, removing many bags of refuse from riverside
parks, greenbelts, and the river itself. The refuse removed averages
about 20 cubic yards per year (that's two full-sized dumpsters!). |

| GLERL Open Houses and Tours: As a federal laboratory
and community partner, GLERL often opens its facilities up to the
public and to specific groups interested in learning more about Great
Lakes research. The most recent open house was held in conjunction
with GLERL's 30th anniversary celebration in April 2004. Tours of
both the Ann Arbor laboratory and the Muskegon field station can be
