National Ocean Sciences Bowl Fourth
Place National Winners Visit |
Fourth place winners at the national competition win an all-expense-paid trip to the Great Lakes. The teams tour GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station facilities and learn about GLERL research activities and Great Lakes issues. Other activities may include a cruise on GLERL's research vessel Laurentian, visit Great Lakes sand dune communities at Hoffmaster State Park, tour the U.S.S. Silversides WWII submarine, attend the Grand Haven Coast Guard festival and tour the Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw, visit a local trout stream to learn about running water ecology, canoe/kayak on the AuSable River, learn about Michigan's logging history at Hoffmaster State Park, and enjoy the rich cultural, historical, and recreational resources of the Great Lakes region. The team also visits NOAA's Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center located at the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve in Alpena, MI on Lake Huron. While there, the team will learn about Great Lakes shipwrecks and snorkle a shipwreck site in Thunder Bay.
The 2008 Winner:
Dexter High School, Dexter, MI Team members include (from left) Casey Hall, Will Grundler, Jon Wike (Asst. Coach), Chris Henes, Justin Wike, James Priestley, and Cheryl Wells (Coach). The team began their trip with a visit to NOAA's Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center located at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve in Alpena, MI. The team snorkelled two shipwreck sites and visited a lighthouse in Presque Isle, MI before travelling to Grayling, MI for a canoe and kayak trip down the Au Sable River. They also visited GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station in Muskegon, MI where they learned about GLERL research programs and Great Lakes issues. Also while in Muskegon, they toured the U.S.S. Silversides WWII submarine, participated in a research cruise aboard the R/V Laurentian, and enjoyed the Lake Michigan shoreline. |

The 2006 Winner:
| Albany High School, Albany, CA Team members include (from left) Ritchie Chen, Andrey Poletayev, Jackie Quinn, Ian Allen, and team coach, Peggy Carlock who teaches AP Chemistry at Albany High School. The team began their trip with a visit to GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station in Muskegon, MI where they learned about GLERL reseach programs. They also visited a local state park, toured the U.S.S. Silversides WWII submarine, and participated in a research cruise aboard the R/V Laurentian. The team then travelled across the state, visiting areas of interest along the way to learn about watershed ecology and Michigan's logging history. The remainder of the trip was spent in Alpena, MI at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve, where they snorkelled a shipwreck site in Thunder Bay and visited a Lake Huron lighthouse. |

A&M Consolidate High School, College Station, Texas The coach of the team, Dr. Elaine Smith, is a biology, marine, and aquatic science teacher and Head of the Science Department. Christopher Smith, an A&M senior, is involved in many extracurricular activities as well as competitive academics. Felix Huang, a junior, plays the violin, competes in UIL academics and is president of the Latin club. Adam Wang, a junior, thoroughly enjoys math and physics and competes in math events. Michael Adams, a junior has competed in Science Bowl for the past three years and went to nationals last year. Justin Chow, a senior, enjoys problem solving and won first place with his Brazos Best Robotics team. |

Irmo High School, Columbia, South Carolina The coach of the team from Irmo High School is Stephen Orr, a chemistry teacher and coach of the IHS Science Team. Alex Koth, captain of the team, has a diverse interest in science, and hopes to major in biomedical engineering in college. Jonathan Hess is a member of several organizations at IHS, including the Science Team and the National Honor Society. Bernadette Nebus is president of the Art Club and the National Honor Society, and hopes to major in biochemistry and minor in art in college. Michael Parrish has a strong interest in the biological sciences, with an emphasis on herpetology. Eve Hosford is involved with the Science Team and the orchestra. |

Chapman High School, Inman, South Carolina The Chapman High School National Ocean Sciences Bowl team from Inman, South Carolina visited GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station (LMFS) in Muskegon, Michigan, July 29-August 1, 2000. The team won the all-expense-paid trip to LMFS after placing fourth in the NOSB national competition held at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies in Linthicum, MD (40 miles from Washington, DC).
