GLERL 2004 Milestone Reports

< GLERL 2004 Milestone main page

GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches

Scientist: Dr. David Reid

NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number of invasive species under control

OAR / ISP Performance Measure: Increased number and accuracy of forecasts of significant ecological events and trends (e.g. harmful algal blooms, coral bleaching and populations shifts, etc.)

Milestone: Plan and convene a workshop to develop a NOAA Aquatic Invasive Species Strategic Research Plan. (Reid, GLERL)

Purpose: A Strategic Research Plan is needed for Invasive Species Program, now part of the Habitat Matrix Program. Research is integral to the NOAA Invasive Species Program (ISP) and the NOAA National Center for Research on Aquatic Invasive Species (NCRAIS) is responsible for leading and coordinating NOAA’s research on Aquatic Invasive Species, as part of the ISP. NCRAIS is charged with planning, organizing, and convening a workshop to initiate this Strategic Plan development.

Efforts and Results (to date): A site has been chosen (NOS, Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research, Charleston, SC), a program committee has been established with representation from NOAA Research, NOS, and NMFS, and dates have been set (September 7-9). Participation of NOAA research scientists and program managers has been informally solicited and a formal announcement will be issued before the end of July.

Customer(s): NOAA Invasive Species Program, NOAA Research, National Ocean Service, National Marine Fisheries Service

Cause Factors (if milestone not met): Delays in FY2004 budget authority and planning related to the changes to the Invasive Species Program, from a Matrix to a program within the Habitat Matrix, took away much of the available time for arranging the workshop to occur before the end of the 2nd quarter.

Revised Completion Date (if milestone not met): September 2004
