GOAL 1: Ecosystem

Scientist: Steve Ruberg (GLERL)

NOAA Program: Ecosystem Research

OAR Performance Measure: Research to improve our understanding of the factors affecting ecosystems and the success of ecosystem approaches to management.

NOAA Performance Objective: Assess, model and forecast ecosystem resources for management decisions

Ecosystem Research Program Performance Measure: PM6: Cumulative number of tools and technologies that improve ecosystem-based management.

Milestone: Development of a universal, high band width buoy system for coastal observations.  Complete the integration of two integrated ocean observing system buoys and sensors into Lake Erie central basin coastal observatory node and develop a real-time environmental data base management system in collaboration with the Ohio State Supercomputing Center.

Purpose: Successful ecosystem forecasting and validation depend on the availability of data describing the present state of the Great Lakes and coastal regions at a variety of time and space scales. Observing baseline ecological and environmental parameters is the key to developing the understanding and process information needed to develop prediction models for such stressors as climate change, population growth along the coastal zone, and exploitation of natural resources on the ecosystem. An observation network that provides the time and space scales necessary to track ecosystem process and provide the data in a timely manner is required to establish both the initial conditions and verification of forecast models.

Efforts and Results (to date):Two buoys were deployed on Lake Michigan at Grand Haven in support of the development of models for forecasting beach closures, one buoy was deployed in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to provide real-time physical observations and shipwreck imagery, two system were deployed on Lake Erie in support of the development of forecast models for episodic hypoxia events and harmful algal blooms.

Customer(s): National Weather Service (NWS) Marine forecasters, Coast Guard, and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary – currently writing Transition of Research to Application plan in collaboration with NWS.
