GLERL 2004 Milestone ReportsMilestones are organized by fiscal year quarter. Third Quarter | Fourth Quarter THIRD QUARTER (July 2004)GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Tom Nalepa NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number and accuracy of forecasts of significant ecological events and trends. OAR Performance Measure: Provide current assessment of the benthic community as an ongoing monitoring and assessment program. Baseline: 8 times, once every five years; Target: 1 for years 1999-2004. Milestone-04-3-1: Assess changes in lake populations as a result of invasive species; assess how the quantity of invasive species impact the foodweb (e.g. population shifts, fisheries impacts). GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Peter Landrum NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number of invasive species under control OAR Performance Measure: Number of ballast water treatment technologies that can meet a 95% removal standard (of organisms) Milestone-04-3-2: Develop a risk assessment of ballast water disinfectant discharge for Duluth Harbor. GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Doran Mason NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number of fish species with adequate information to assess their condition. OAR PM: Baseline: 0 fish species; Target: 1 fish species. Milestone 04-3-5: Complete an evaluation of hydroacoustics technology to quantify natural production of Chinook smolts in Great Lake tributaries. GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. David Reid NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number of invasive species under control OAR Performance Measure: Increased number and accuracy of forecasts of significant ecological events and trends (e.g. harmful algal blooms, coral bleaching and populations shifts, etc.) Milestone-04-3-3: Plan and
convene a workshop to develop a NOAA Aquatic Invasive Species Strategic
Research Plan. GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Henry Vanderploeg NOAA Performance Measure: Increased number of invasive species under control OAR Performance Measure: Increased number of invasive species under control Milestone-04-3-4: Finding a niche in the Great Lakes: the story of the invasion of the non-indigenous predatory cladoceran, Cercopagis pengoi. FOURTH QUARTER (SEPTEMBER 2004)GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Michael McCormick (GLERL) NOAA Performance Measure: Increased area covered and number of ecological conditions monitored by stat-of-the-art observation systems and platforms that provide necessary information about NOAA’s stewardship responsibilities. OAR Performance Measure: Provide evaluation of the utility of RAFOS drifting buoys for application in the Great Lakes. Baseline 0, Target 1 deployment Milestone 04-4-1: Investigate the utility of PAFOS underwater drifting buoy on Lake Champlain to describe subsurface water transport. GOAL: Protect, Restore and Manage Use of Ocean and Coastal Resources Through Ecosystem Management Approaches Scientist: Dr. Brian Eadie (GLERL) NOAA Performance Measure: Increased numbers of techniques and tools that can be used to restore and protect ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes resources. OAR Performance Measure: Increase the number of sediment core analyses used to estimate the major removal pathway of PCBs (and most other contaminants) from Lake Michigan. Baseline: 4 cores used Target: 40 cores used. Milestone 04-4-2: Finalize measurements and calculations for the current rates of sediment inventory of PCB's in Lake Michigan.
