NOAA GREAT LAKES ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH LABORATORY (GLERL)

RESEARCH PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION
Overview - Accomplishments, Plans, and Partnerships

Over its history GLERL has positioned itself to maintain excellence in research while addressing important issues for managing the resources and preserving life and property in the Great Lakes and in the nearshore/coastal marine areas of the country. This section (Research Program Documentation) provides a synopsis of GLERL's research activities: our research programs and projects, the major products and scientific accomplishments we have achieved over time; our recent accomplishments and current research plans; and those with whom we collaborate.

Major Accomplishments:   GLERL's research has resulted in major scientific findings and new technologies that have significantly advanced our understanding of, and ability to manage, the Great Lakes and coastal ecosystems. This document provides a cumulative summary of our most significant achievements and products since the lab was established. It is updated as appropriate and generally reflects the results of completed projects or of major research units within on-going projects.

Accomplishments and Plans:   major scientific results and findings are generally achieved through on-going research activities that produce annual accomplishments and progress representing steady movement towards achieving identified project goals and objectives. This document provides an overview of our entire research agenda, including summaries of GLERL's current programs and projects, an annual update of our research accomplishments and progress covering the preceding fiscal year, and the research activities (plans) we hope to be able to accomplish during the present fiscal year.

Operating Plan Milestones:   NOAA was one of the first agencies to respond to the Government Performance and Review Act (Public Law 103-62) by developing a Strategic Plan and a related (sliding) Five-Year Implementation Plan which includes specific programmatic objectives, performance measures, and milestones. The Five-Year Implementation Plan, in turn, gives rise to an Annual Operating Plan within each of NOAA's Line Organizations (LOs) which outlines the milestones targeted by that LO for each fiscal year. GLERL's Milestones under the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) current FY Operating Plan are listed, and will be reported here as they are achieved, on a quarterly basis.

Partnerships and Collaborations:   GLERL staff participate in a diverse array of interactions and collaborations to meet its mission, support the NOAA mission, and to strengthen the environmental policy and decision-making by other agencies with responsibilities in the Great Lakes and coastal marine systems. This document provides a list of agencies and institutions with which our scientists presently interact and/or collaborate. Some are clients who use our research products and scientific expertise, some are colleagues with similar research interests, and some are both.
