Ship Operations

NOAA's green ship fleet

As of May, 2006 all three GLERL vessels had transitioned to total petroleum-free operation. The change to 100% biodiesel fuel has resulted in a reduction in emissions by removing nearly all sulfur and aromatics, as well as lessening unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. There is also a 78% reduction in net carbon dioxide emissions due to the closed carbon cycle involved in biodiesel. In addition, all other shipboard mechanical and hydraulic systems have been converted to bio-fuels and lubricants, which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly in case of a spill or leak.
