Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System
What's New Page
- Dec 5, 2011
Starting today, ice was turned on. ICE=1, ALPHAICE=0.01. All 5 lakes.
- May 24, 2011
pomgl-ice model now used for all lakes, nowcast and forecast, ISFLUX=10 to utilize the ice model. Simulation re-run starting DOY 101, 2011.
- May 19, 2011
New constant-temp restart files were generated, based on water temps from GLSEA, DOY 099, 2011. Simulation re-run starting DOY 101, 2011.
- May 2, 2011
Starting today , ice was turned off.
- Dec 8, 2010
Starting today, ice was turned on.
- Dec 1, 2010
Ice assimilation added to Lake Erie pomgl-ice.
- Ju1 19, 2010
Began using shallow water wave model for Lake St Clair ncast and fcast.
- Jun 9, 2010
Added Lake St. Clair (500m grid) to forecast cycle. ndfd data and wave model only. Started
runs on day 001.
- Apr 27, 2010
Added Lake St. Clair (500m grid) to nowcast cycle. Met data and wave model only. Started
runs on day 101.
- Apr 14, 2010
Starting today (12Z, 4/14/10), ice was turned off.
- Nov 3, 2009
New pomgl-ice model replaced pomgl. For Lake Erie nowcast and forecast, ISFLUX=10 to utilize the ice model.
For the other lakes, ISFLUX=0 to use the original heat flux subroutines (i.e., no ice).
- Sep 23, 2009
'nudging' was turned off, as it was determined to create erroneous temp structure (e.g., too much heat at depth).
All of 2009 nowcasts were re-run w/o 'nudging'.
- Jun 23, 2009
Data assimilation was added to the GLCFS nowcasts. The daily GLSEA temperature for each lake is compared
to the lake-wide average surface temperature. The difference is set to a parameter called Tadj. Once per day, Tadj
is uniformly added to the temp field for each lake, preserving the vertical structure. This process is also known
as 'nudging'.
- Feb 19, 2009
Lake Huron was switched from 5km to 2km. The entire year was rerun using the new grid. Lake Huron now also
includes static river flow.
- May 25, 2007
Forecast scripts modified to use NDFD air temps and winds when available instead of ETA air temps
and winds.
- Mar 30, 2006
Lake Michigan was switched from 5km to 2km. The entire year was rerun using the new grid. Lake Michigan now also
includes static river flow.
- Mar 22, 2006
Lake Erie was switched from 5km to 2km. The entire year was rerun using the new grid. Lake Erie now also
includes static river flow.
- Dec 06, 2005
Starting today (0Z, 12/6/05), ice was turned on.
- Apr 28, 2005
Starting today (0Z, 4/28/05), ice was turned off.
- Feb 2, 2005
Starting today (0Z, 2/2/05), the GLCFS wave model runs (nowcast and forecast) will take into account the ice cover
from the most recent GLSEA. This includes the grib wave files (mapped onto the awips227 grid) I am ftping to the NWS
gateway. The waves are dampened as a function of the ice concentration.
- Jan 11, 2005
Moved the GLCFS site to http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/.
- Apr 15, 2004
Began appending GLSEA sea surface temps/ice concentration to the gribbed wave heights (forecast 2x per day) being
sent to NWS gateway for dissemination via AWIPS.
- Mar 04, 2004
Extended the GLCFS forecasts out to 60 hrs (from 48 hrs).
- Oct 17, 2002
Began ftping GLCFS wave forecasts (2x per day, grib format) to NWS gateway for dissemination via AWIPS.
- Sep 11, 2002
Added Surface Currents to graphical products
- Aug 01, 2002
Added Lakes Superior and Ontario POMGL to nowcast and forecast cycles
- July 03, 2002
Replaced Lake Superior 15-km bathy grid with Lake Superior 10-km grid
- Dec 12, 2001
Began using the ETA-12 model on the AWIPS-215 (20 km) grid
- Nov 30, 2001
Switched from NCEP's ETA-22 km grid to NCEP's ETA-12 km grid
