Profile: Most Great Lakes Pinnularia spp. prefer water of low mineral content (except P. virdis). Many prefer cool waters (P. borealis, P. braunii v. amphicephala, P. brebissonii. P. brevicostata, P. divergens var. bacillaris, P. divergens var. elliptica, P. intermedia, P. nodosa, P. substomatophora, P. viridis v. commutata) and several acid (P. abaujensis v. rostrata, P. burkii, P. microstauron, P. substomatophora, P. termitina) or oligotrophic (P. tenuis, P. globiceps, P. microstauron, P. undulata v. subundulata) environments. P. globiceps is found at the sediment level with the subspecies P. globiceps v. krockii limited to oxygen rich areas. Size ranges from P. microstauron f. biundulata and P. obscura (from 12x3um) to P. gentilis (260x36 um) and P. major (to 200x40 um).globe indicates off-site linkUniversity of Michigan, globe indicates off-site linkCalifornia Academy of Sciences, globe indicates off-site linkFlorida International University
