The Family Sididae includes just 4 Great Lakes genera and 5 species. Fine features of the 2nd antennae and postabdomen are used to distinguish among genera and species - necessitating use of a high-powered light microscope at a minimum.

Green highlighting indicates a unique feature of the species.

Dorsal branch of 2nd antennae with 2 segments. Postabdomen without spines. No ocellus. 0.8-1.2mm.

Diaphanosoma (2 Great Lakes species)

Dorsal branch of 2nd antennae with 2 segments, basal extended to effectively form a 3rd branch. - Tongue-like projection on the ventral surface of the head. 2-3mm.

Dorsal branch of 2nd antennae with 2 segments. Postabdomen with about 9 small spines. Ocellus. 1.8mm.

Dorsal branch of 2nd antennae with 3 segments. 3-4mm.
