Hemimysis anomala

Recommended Sampling Protocols

Alternative Trap Design

Line drawing of hemimysis trap (1) Bridal veil material doubled and stretched over mouth with elastic band – anything coarse enough to let the air out when submerging, but fine enough to strain out hemimysis when lifting out of water. When lifting, preserve veil and then sort out later in the lab.

(2) anchor string – positioned towards the entrance end of the trap, so that the bottle will be throat up to release air when submerged, and throat-down to prevent loss of water/plankton through entrance when pulled out of the water. Anchor string attached through a hole in bottle and knot inside.

(4) float attached by string through holes (3) positioned so that the trap will balance approx. horizontally when deployed and full of water.

Also…. It is a lot easier to fasten the two bottles together using office stapler.
