Easily confused with white perch, white bass is a native species preferring clear open waters with a firm bottom at depths less than 30 feet. Travel in schools, which drive minnows to the surface, often attracting gulls. The white bass is a life-long carnivore (meat-eater). As larvae, they begin with waterfleas and copepods but quickly begin to include insect larvae and even larval fish, especially carp. Adults continue to include waterfleas and insect larvae but add sideswimmers and a wide array of fish. Length to 50cm but typically 25 to 35 cm.. MN state record is 457 mm (about 18 in) and 1.8 kg (4 lbs).
