In cool streams and shallow margins of the Great Lakes. In streams they eat aquatic insect larvae and sideswimmers. In lakes, copepods, waterfleas, leeches, and algae are added. Occasionally, fish eggs and even small fish are found in mottled sculpin stomachs. Length to 13 cm.

Feed on benthos ( larval aquatic insects, invertebrates); depth to 125 m. Length to 10 cm.

Descending to 50-150 m. Feed on benthos. Length to 8-10 cm.

Density of more than 1/5 square meters across the deep bottom of Lake Superior. Extirpated from Lake Ontario, but returning. Feed on benthos. Length to 15 cm.
