Important Visitor Information

All in-person visitors are required to receive a visitor badge from the front desk at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory facility. Visitors need to present a valid U.S. photo ID or green card. If you are a Foreign National, advance notification of at least 48 hours is needed so that security guidelines are followed. You will need to present your passport (a copy will NOT work). For questions regarding building access, or assistance in obtaining Foreign National clearance, please call 734-741-2393 or email Tim.Powell@noaa.gov

By Air

The closest passenger airport is Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is about 25 miles from GLERL via I-94. From DTW, you have various options, including car rentals, cabs, and shuttle services. More information may be found at http://www.metroairport.com/GroundTransportation.aspx.

By Auto

(Distances are approximate)

From the east (WINDSOR, ONTARIO or DETROIT, MICHIGAN (about 43 mi); DETROIT METRO AIRPORT (~25 mi): Take I-94 west to Exit 177 (State St.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto S. State Rd. Go ~1.5 miles to 4840 S. State Rd., on the right (west) side of the road (see Notes, below).

From the north (LANSING, MICHIGAN (~77 mi; take I-96 east to Exit 148A for US-23 South); FLINT (~68 mi) & BRIGHTON (~30 mi), MICHIGAN) Take US-23 South towards Ann Arbor. As you approach Ann Arbor on US-23 South, follow signs for M-14 East/US-23 South, a left exit (towards Toledo). After a short distance, M-14 and US-23 will split, with US-23 South going off to the right. Follow signs for US-23 South towards Toledo and continue to Exit 35 (I-94 exit). Take I-94 West (towards Chicago) to Exit 177 (State St., ~2.3 mi) and at the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto S. State Rd. Go ~1.5 miles to 4840 S. State Rd., on the right side of the road (see Notes, below).

From the south (TOLEDO, OHIO, ~50 mi) Take US-23 North toward Ann Arbor. Take Exit 35 and follow I-94 West towards Chicago to Exit 177 (State St.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto S. State Rd. Go ~1.5 miles to 4840 S. State Rd., on the right side of the road (see Notes, below).

From the west (JACKSON, MICHIGAN (~39 mi); BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN (~80 mi); KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN (~102 mi); CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (~245 mi)) In Michigan, take I-94 East towards Detroit to Exit 177 (State St.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto S. State Rd. Go ~1.4 miles to 4840 S. State Rd., on the right side of the road.

Note: State St. becomes State Rd. near the I-94 overpass. The entrance to GLERL is on the right (west) side of S. State Rd after you pass the Ann Arbor Airport, and just after you pass “Devon Self Storage” (also on your right). Do not be confused by a building labeled “4840” visible on the left (east) side of S. State Rd. opposite the entrance to GLERL's parking lot. That building is not actually on S. State Rd. and is not GLERL.

From the Ann Arbor Amtrak station, located at 325 Depot St: Make a left from the train station parking lot onto Depot St. Go ~ 0.25 miles to State Street (on right, at top of hill). Turn right and travel south on State St. ~4.9 miles, passing through downtown Ann Arbor and crossing over I-94, to 4840 S. State Rd., on the right side of the road (see Notes, below).
